Contrasts at Caol Ila Distillery, Isle of Islay

Picture of a distillery with an old warehouse and a modern stillhouseTwo very different periods at Caol Ila distillery at the Sound of Islay. On the right the modern still house and office built in the 1970s, on the left the old traditional warehouse (not sure when that was built).

  1. The newer building is a whisky factory, an incredible amount of spirit is distilled there. Makes me a bit sad, I like to think of Islay as an island of micro distilleries.

    • True, but then again I believe with the exception of Kilchoman I believe all the distilleries on Islay are 24×7 operations now. Quite a few have a lot of automation as well, although you usually don’t get to see that during the tours 😉
