Unfortunately a view long gone, the bakery closed many years ago, leaving Islay without a bakery. Recently a small bread baker has started up, but there is no full time baker on Islay at the moment.
Many years ago, we used to stay at ‘The Inns’ – opposite and now owned by the Harbour Inn – and we nipped across in the morning for fresh bread and rolls for breakfast. Delicious!
I remember when Lexie Currie was the baker in Bowmore, and his shop was beside Hodkinsons. He was a great baker and used to make beautifully decorated wedding cakes, which he displayed in the shop window. Once I went to his daughter Mary’s birthday party and the spread was incredible! We all ate far too much.
