Probably the most famous house on Jura, Barnhill, where George Orwell wrote his famous book 1984. Here seen from the water during a boat trip to the Corryvreckan (where Orwell and his son got into serious trouble once).

That’s unexpectedly lovely. I’d always imagined something small and basic.
Well, the inside is basic (for modern standards) as far as I know. I think it’s a gas powered fridge and oil lamps or something along those lines.
Probably fairly normal on the islands in those days though. The setting looks glorious but not so appealing in winter I suspect.
The commute to the shop, pub and unless you’re working from home to work is rather arduous as well….
I’ll make it there some day!
A bit of a hike from the end of the metalled road I understand. Currently reading @nbissell ‘s excellent book ‘Barnhill a novel’. Highly recommended.
I can’t remember how long it took to get there when we passed it while on our way to the Corryvreckan with WalkIslay a few years ago, but I’d say easily an hour or even more. Seeing it again from the boat was much faster and easier 😉
I’m reading it too. An enchanting novel!
Looking forward to Norman Bissell talking about Orwell writing @islaybookfest his 1984
