At the Jura road end

This is as far as you can drive from the crossing over the Sound of Islay, the end of the public road on Jura (I reversed my car from the car park, from where I took this picture, to get it next to the sign). It’s also the starting point for the long walk to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, well behind the hills in the distance. On the way you’ll also pass Barnhill, where Orwell wrote 1984.

A stunning April morning on the west coast of Scotland, a view from the north east of Jura. You can just make out Barnhill (where Orwell wrote 1984) just left of centre. We walked past on our way to the Corryvreckan whirlpool with an Islay walking week excursion.

Probably the most famous house on Jura, Barnhill, where George Orwell wrote his famous book 1984. Here seen from the water during a boat trip to the Corryvreckan (where Orwell and his son got into serious trouble once).
