Submarine and helicopter exercise near Islay

A fairly low quality picture, but then again it was taken 15 years ago with my very first digital camera (1.6 megapixel, mobile phone cameras have a multiple of that these days). It’s a fairly rare sight I believe and I remember the ferry captain alerting us about it on the tannoy: A submarine (don’t ask me which class, I have no idea) and a helicopter exercising off the south east of Islay.

A beautiful April day in 2015, not a cloud in the sky. A great day for a ferry crossing with amazing views. This panoramic view covers the southeastern corner of Islay at the southern end of the Sound of Islay. McArthur’s Head on the left. Sgorr nam Faoileann (429m) in the centre, behind it towards the left is Glas Bheinn (472m).
