The “Opera House Rocks”, Isle of Islay

Picture of a rock formation which in a way reminds of the famous opera house in Sydney, AustraliaNo, that’s not their real name. But to many people on Islay and elsewhere they are known as the “Opera House Rocks”, as they with a bit of imagination remind of the famous opera house in Sydney, Australia. Most people will know their silhouette looking north from Saligo Bay, here’s a closer look from a walk up the coast north of Saligo.

Beautiful clear June night sky, Isle of Islay

Image

Picture of a bright night sky in JuneOn a clear June night on Islay while no midnight sun it doesn’t really get dark, especially when the picture is taken with a long exposure looking north. This is a view from near Kilchoman Church, looking towards Saligo and Loch Gorm. Low mist was forming over Loch Gorm. Only a few stars can be seen in the sky as it was still too light even well past midnight.

Walking on the west coast of Islay

Picture of a man walking on a hill overlooking a dramatic coastline with a small beachA view from the west coast of Islay north of Saligo, that’s me walking on the top of the steep cliff. The beach below is Tràigh Bhàn, just above it you’ll find one of the memorials for the Exmouth disaster. Picture courtesy of my sister Imke, taken during one of our Islay walks in June 2013.
