Most people will know this distinct rock formation as you see it from Saligo Bay and around looking north. This is a different view, from the even higher cliffs behind them near Smaull looking west. Do you know what this is?

  1. There are a lot of igneous dykes, mainly basalt on Arran and Coll where I have visited. These cut through the older gneiss on Coll and I think Islay (gneiss is a granite like metamorphic rock) and erode more quickly than the gneiss often leaving channels with straight, steep sides. It could be that the basalt has only partial weathered leaving the depressions – can’t be certain without a geology map, or seeing the geology first hand.
