Sanctuary cross (and some sheep) below the Kilchoman crags, Isle of Islay

Sanctuary cross (and some sheep) below the Kilchoman crags, Isle of Islay

An ancient sanctuary cross in a field at Kilchoman, Kilchoman church and cross are about 200 metres to the left. From what I understand the story behind the crosses (there used to be three or four of them) is that if someone had committed a crime and made it into a triangle/square made up of three of those crosses, then they were safe from prosecution (as long as they stayed within the triangle). Another surviving cross is now in the Museum of Islay Life in Port Charlotte.

Well, that’s me, out on Kilchoman beach doing some litter picking while out on a beach walk. I had managed to find some kind of bucket, which I used to collect litter. Picture courtesy of my sister Imke, who joined in to the litter picking soon after taking this picture.

A view down Shore Street in Bowmore from the corner with Main Street on a nice sunny June day in 2025. The Celtic House on the left, excellent book store and more.
