In June 2025 my sister and I went up to Sanaigmore just before the midsummer solstice in the hope of catching a nice sunset just off the headlands west of Sanaigmore Bay. For most of the year the sun sets behind the headlands to the west, but for a week or so either side of the summer solstice you should be able to see the sun setting over the Atlantic if you walk to the eastern end of Sanaigmore Bay. Alas, as it turned out the weather gods weren’t with us and some clouds on the horizon blocked our view of the setting sun.
A June evening on the west coast of Islay, a very low tide in Saligo Bay. My sister Imke took this picture with me walking out on the beach in the distance towards the left (also taking pictures)
