South-east Islay from the Jura viewpoint

Image

Picture of a view across a sound between two islands, a stone bench in the foregroundUnfortunately now closed to the public, this is a viewpoint from one of the walks at Jura House, Brosdale. The view is across the southern end of the Sound of Islay, McArthur’s Head lighthouse across from the bench my sister Imke is sitting on. Beinn Bheigier (491m) just right of centre.

The Paps of Jura and Corran River, Isle of Jura

Picture of a small river with stepping stones, three big mountains (The Paps of Jura) behind itA beautiful view on Islay’s neighbour Jura. This is just below the stepping stones to cross the Corran River when coming up from the Three Arched Bridge. Loch an t-Siob towards the left with Beinn a’Chaolais behind. Beinn Shiantaidh on the right and Beinn an Oir in the centre behind it.

Black Rocks buoy in the Sound of Islay

Image

Picture of a buoy labelled Black Rocks in a fast flowing soundAt the southern end of the Sound of Islay on the Jura side the ferry to Port Askaig passes a buoy with the label Black Rocks. The ‘wash’ behind it also nicely show the strong tidal flows in the sound, one of the reasons it was chosen as a site for a tidal power generation installation. Also note the Jura ferry on her way to Port Askaig in the distance.
