Rocky coast from Rubha Lamanais, Isle of Islay

Image

Picture of a rocky coastline with low cliffsA bright and sunny although hazy view from the west coast of Islay. For this view I had climbed up a bit on Rubha Lamanais (to many known as the Opera House Rocks). The view is south west, in the top left corner is Saligo Bay. If you look very closely you can just about make out the crags with the radar station above Machir Bay in the haze behind it.

The “Opera House Rocks”, Isle of Islay

Picture of a rock formation which in a way reminds of the famous opera house in Sydney, AustraliaNo, that’s not their real name. But to many people on Islay and elsewhere they are known as the “Opera House Rocks”, as they with a bit of imagination remind of the famous opera house in Sydney, Australia. Most people will know their silhouette looking north from Saligo Bay, here’s a closer look from a walk up the coast north of Saligo.

Walking near Smaull, Isle of Islay

Panoramic view over a coastal landscape from a hill, a walker coming up the hillWalking on the west coast of Islay a decade ago. The view is south from just north of Smaull (buildings just right of centre). Saligo Bay on the right. Loch Gorm just visible in the distance, to the right of An Carnan on the left. In the far distance Sunderland Hill and the Kilchoman Crags.

Coming up the hill is my late mother on the first of her three Islay visits.
