Islay north coast panorama near Bholsa caves

Image

Panoramic picture of a coastline with raised beachesThe north coast of Islay has some of the most impressive raised beaches on the island. Here a view west from near Bholsa caves (the big cave is in the cliff face straight ahead). Mala Bholsa (127m) straight ahead in the distance, Colonsay and Oronsay just visible on the horizon on the right.

North Colonsay and Mull from Mala Bholsa, Isle of Islay

Image

Picture of a view across the sea to two islandsA very nice view from the north of Islay, from the summit of Mala Bholsa to be precise, looking over to Colonsay and Mull. The northern end of Colonsay in front on the left, behind it the Isle of Mull with Ben More (966m (3,169ft), the only island Munro outside of Skye).

Whale sculpture/mosaic, Isle of Colonsay

Image

Picture of a view at a whale sculpture/mosaic created out of stonesA fascinating art work on Islay’s neighbour Colonsay, created by artist Julian Meredith and continuously being improved by visitors. Visitors are encouraged to add stones from surrounding raised beaches (e.g. Balnahard) to the outline created by Julian. While you can see from ground level the best views are from nearby hills, here from Carnan Eoin.
