One of my favourite beaches on Islay and the most northerly beach on the island, Bàgh an Dà Dhoruis near Rhuvaal lighthouse. The raised beaches along the north coast of Islay are towering over it while Mull and Jura are visible in the distance.

At the Jura road end

This is as far as you can drive from the crossing over the Sound of Islay, the end of the public road on Jura (I reversed my car from the car park, from where I took this picture, to get it next to the sign). It’s also the starting point for the long walk to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, well behind the hills in the distance. On the way you’ll also pass Barnhill, where Orwell wrote 1984.

Moody November morning at the Sound of Islay

A moody November morning at the Sound of Islay, waiting on the ferry to depart for a day out in Jura. The Islay lifeboat (in the shade on the right) ready for its next callout.
