Earlier on these Swans had been spread out over Ardnave Loch, but when I returned from a short walk through the dunes on a blustery day on Islay they had all huddled together. Most of them are Whooper Swans, but there were a few Mute Swans among them as well.
Not sure what caught its attention, if it was me or something else, but this Lapwing was carefully watching its surroundings at Ardnave Loch.
At one point there were over 200 on Ardnave Loch, but unfortunately I missed out on that spectacle. Here are just two of the many hundreds of Whooper Swans passing through Islay on their way to Ireland every winter.
