They typically don’t winter on Islay, they just pass through on their way to Ireland. Several hundred of them passed within a few days during my November visit.

Huddled Swans at Ardnave Loch, Isle of Islay

Picture of a group of Swans huddled together at the edge of a loch (lake)Earlier on these Swans had been spread out over Ardnave Loch, but when I returned from a short walk through the dunes on a blustery day on Islay they had all huddled together. Most of them are Whooper Swans, but there were a few Mute Swans among them as well.
