At the Jura road end

This is as far as you can drive from the crossing over the Sound of Islay, the end of the public road on Jura (I reversed my car from the car park, from where I took this picture, to get it next to the sign). It’s also the starting point for the long walk to the Corryvreckan whirlpool, well behind the hills in the distance. On the way you’ll also pass Barnhill, where Orwell wrote 1984.

Probably one of the best days out you can get from Islay and Jura, a trip with a RIB to the famous Corryvreckan whirlpool between Jura and Scarba. Here the RIB is approaching some of the currents with Scarba in the background.

A view of Eilean Beag at the northern end of Jura, seen from the Gulf of Corryvreckan. This is where George Orwell was briefly stranded with his young son when his boat got into trouble in the Corryvreckan. Luckily a fishing boat came past and was able to rescue them.
